Here are just a few techniques you will discover:

  • The secret to planning your painting, depending on what the light of the sun is doing...
  • What colors to mix as the sun gets warmer to achieve the appropriate value shifts that make your painting seem real...
  • The most effective techniques for working with reflections and how you can use light to enhance your composition the way the the pros do
  • How to prevent the typical mistakes that beginner and intermediate painters make so you can see faster results on the canvas

Here Are Some Other Techniques You'll Discover

  • Learn how Joe uses a drawing technique typically used for figurative work to help you lay your forms out in the correct way and dramatically improve your proportions and drawing
  • How to use the palette knife as a "chaos instrument" to make your painting look more natural and less deliberate
  • How to create texture without losing your sense of form
  • How to capture both the subtle and not-so-subtle ways that foliage interacts with the rest of the landscape
  • How to take your outdoor painting and improve the compositional design in the studio

Sound difficult? It's not!

Joe creates a demo fully en plein air and then takes that study into the studio to build a studio painting, complete with layers of glazing.

You can paint along with this step-by-step painting tutorial to learn how to paint a breathtaking landscape scene using Joe's most powerful painting techniques — the techniques he has developed over decades of painting.

It's time for Joseph McGurl to pass down his techniques from master to apprentice.

You'd be surprised at the number of established professional painters who turn to McGurl for instruction to take their already high-quality work to the highest levels.

He will show how to use information gathered on location and apply it to a large studio piece. His plein air study technique is unique and uses tools that will help make your drawing almost perfect.

You don't need to be an experienced painter to learn how to do this.

And you don't have to have talent to paint. That comes from training.

In fact, in the words of our publisher, B. Eric Rhoads, if you can follow a recipe and bake a cake, you can learn to paint. Because painting is a process.

This training is right for you if:

  • You love the idea of creating stunning landscape paintings
  • You want to understand the techniques that make Joe McGurl one of the most sought-after and collectable painters in America
  • You're a beginner, intermediate, or even professional painter and you want to improve your technique significantly

If any of the above apply to you, then we encourage you to place your order now.

Magnificent

Watching Joe paint and apply his techniques was the most inspiring painting video I've ever seen! Every little nuisance factored into what became an absolute masterpiece. Exactly what Eric said, "Joe McGurl is the greatest living artist."

Joseph McGurl: Painting Light and Atmosphere

Very informative and comprehensive set of DVDs. Very well shot with the exception of first 10 minutes or so of the studio painting which was marred by glare from the lights reflecting off of the wet painting surface -- this was quickly corrected and afterwards the process could be followed. Joseph offers clear explanations throughout of what he is trying to achieve and how he intends to do so. Very highly recommended.

Painting Light & Atmosphere with Joseph McGurl

This is a must have for any serious plein air landscape painter. This DVD starts out with Joseph McGurl painting on site in the mountains. He explains what he is doing at all times and you can see this master painter in action, along with his thought process and what brushes and techniques he uses.
One thing that really stood out for me was all the different effects you can get simply by using different brushes and McGurl uses quite a few of them. I
McGurl then takes you inside his studio to make a larger version of his study. He does not keep strictly to his study, he can choose to change things around. He tells you the paints and mediums he uses and when and why he uses each one.
Another thing is that Joseph McGurl does not use photographs! He paints from life on site and takes that back to his studio to make a painting. He may touch up a few things on his study but does not want to hinder the freshness of painting outdoors and the feeling that the studies have. He has so many studies and has been painting outside so long, he knows what the atmosphere will do and also can take parts from each of his studies to make a new painting.

I have been plein air painting for almost 20 years and found this DVD to be so helpful and insightful! I highly recommend this DVD. I watched it in 1/2 hour increments and took pages of notes while watching it. This video is definitely worth your time and money!
